There’s a Chokehold on the world.

I’m not talking about the physical chokehold that tragically killed Eric Garner while others stood and passively looked on.  There are move chokeholds happening every second of every day; none of which are less murderous and destructive to the very soul and lives of each of us.

You may not realize you have been placed in a chokehold but you have.

Have you ever uttered in your mind,

“Help, I can’t breathe?” 

You have to put up with a terrible boss who threatens and belittles you in front of co-workers but you can’t leave because it’s the best thing you can find right now.

The bank calls. You find out your husband drank away the last three months of your house payment.

Your girlfriend met your best friend for drinks and they’ve been sexting for the last week.

Someone ran over your dog and left it to die in the cold, dark street all alone.

The police call.  Someone has run a red light drunk and your little girl is in the hospital on a respirator fighting for her life.

Some people call is sin. Others call it evil.  Some just say it’s human nature. I can’t put a label on it with my simple mind. I only know this last week, the darkness that nightmares are created from have once again visited America in a rampage of hate.

 A father, a twelve year old, a teacher….all dead.

How does it start?

It’s starts with the little things we do to one another to make them uncomfortable, grasping for breathe, freedom, and peace. As time goes by the criminals invading the light of others grow, and those perpetrators cannot eventually remember any thing good or kind about themselves or the world…they have crossed over.  They are dark.

How can we stop this?

For one day only, let us practice only kindness to each person we meet.

Then maybe we can do it again the next day, and the next.

Maybe, just maybe, we will relearn how to think like love,

act like love,

be love,

and make the chokehold of hate, anger, fear, resentment loosen until it disappears forever.
